Rwanda is a unique small country in east central Africa; now full of hope, promise and forgiveness, when at one time in the not too distant past, full of unspeakable horror and heartache.
You're likely familiar with the tragedies that came to Rwanda in the form of genocide in 1994. I was seventeen at the time and knew little of it, embarrassingly enough. I was caught up in teenage angst and high school drama that seems so inconsequential to me now.
The atrocities of that time are unimaginable to most of us, but to the Rwandans, it was real life. So many lost their lives in those three months of terror; the country was torn apart, almost everyone there losing friends, family and neighbors they loved.
When it was all said and done, families from both sides found themselves with similar problems. They were stripped of family members that once provided income for their families. The survivors were not only grieving those they'd lost, either to death or imprisonment, but now they had to find new ways to sustain themselves.
In the years after, with mass reconciliation efforts, a miraculous thing happened. Families from both sides came together to support one another. They put aside the horrible pains that plagued them and instead of harboring anger and resentment, chose to work side by side to rebuild their lives. It's truly a testament to forgiveness and the goodness of the human spirit.
Spending a month in Rwanda really pierced my heart; to meet the beautiful people there, visit the emotional memorials and roam their breathtaking countryside, the land of a thousand hills.
It was an unforgettable part of my trip for so many reasons, and it changed me in ways I didn't even fully understand until many months later.
